VALEWAYNE “VALLIE” FREELAND, age 97 years of Kalamazoo, formerly of Hudson and Portage, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Florida passed away on Thursday, September 5, 2019, at Park Place Assisted Living in Kalamazoo. She was born on November 7, 1921, to Carroll and Mary (Dick) Cramer in Medina Township, Lenawee County, Michigan.

Vallie married Robert Edward Downing on April 8, 1939, in Adrian and he preceded her in death on November 21, 1965. She married Donald H. Freeland on July 23, 1966 and he preceded her in death on January 26, 1986.

Vallie was a member of the Hudson First United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday School Teacher, Cub Scout Den Mother, Newcomers Club Treasurer in Wilkes-Barre, PA and served as Program Chairman in Jackson, MI, Giant Oak Twiggies Ladies Golf League founder and president, she won Mrs. Wilkes-Barre in the Mrs. America Contest and runner up in the Mrs. North Eastern Pennsylvania Contest. She was an avid golfer and enjoyed sewing, quilting, knitting, painting, morel mushroom hunting, wild raspberry picking and jelly making.

Surviving Vallie are her two children, Sharon Schmidt of Temperance and Robert Downing of Portage, a step-daughter, Sandra Kloester of Florida, 3 grandchildren, Kimberly, Matthew and Jason, 2 step-grandchildren, Kris and Kathy, a sister, Nancy (Merle) Boyd of Sylvania, OH and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, parents, son-in-law, Charles Schmidt and 7 brothers and sisters.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will take place at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at the Hudson First United Methodist Church with Pastor Carol J. Freeland officiating. Luncheon to follow. Private interment of cremains will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery in Hudson.

Memorials are suggested to Elara Caring Hospice, 900 Cooper St. Jackson, MI 49202.

Arrangements are entrusted to Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Hudson.
